So, my brand-new, shiny desktop? (Well, it was brand-new back last September)... freezes during boot-up. It gets all the way to the point where the AIM and YM sign-in windows pop up, and the internet connection connects...and then it freezes. I actually got Windows Media Player to open this last time, and then it froze.

Some stuff works in Safe Mode, but not everything, so my question is this: how do I back up my files while in Safe Mode? I click on the link for the back up wizard and nothing happens. I click on WMP and nothing happens. Help?

The nice person at the online Dell assistance chat recommended I reinstall windows and start over. I do NOT want to do this, particularly, so if anyone has any other suggestions, I'm all ears. Particularly with regards to backing up the mother-fing files, which I know I should've been doing all along and DIDN'T. *sighs*

[livejournal.com profile] archie_gremlin suspects a bad network driver or card. He says that since Windows is working in safe mode, it may not be necessary to reinstall Windows.

To test whether it is the network card or driver, he suggests disabling the network card in safe mode, then booting back into normal mode and seeing what happens. If it works okay, then either the card is failing or the driver is duff. Try installing an older version of the driver and seeing if this fixes the problem.

Also, he asks, what operating system is it? Have you updated any drivers lately to your knowledge? Have you installed any new hardware?
