Any of y'all familiar with the Statler Brothers' song "Bed of Roses"?
She was called a scarlet woman by the people
Who would go to church but left me in the street
With no parents of my own, I never had a home
And an eighteen year old boy has got to eat.
She found me outside one Sunday morning
Begging money from a man I didn't know
She took me in and wiped away my childhood
A woman of the streets this lady Rose.
Chorus:
This bed of Rose's that I lay on
Where I was taught to be a man
This bed of Rose's where I'm livin'
Is the only kind of love I understand.
She was a handsome woman, just thirty-four
Who was spoken to in town by very few
She managed a late evening business
Like most of the town wished they could do.
And I learned all the things that a man should know
From a woman not approved of I suppose
But she died knowing that I really loved her
Off life's bramble bush, I picked a rose.
Chorus:
This bed of Rose's that I lay on
Where I was taught to be a man
This bed of Rose's where I'm livin'
Is the only kind of love I understand.
Chorus:
This bed of Rose's that I lay on
Where I was taught to be a man
This bed of Rose's where I'm livin'
Is the only kind of love I understand...
In brief, an orphaned boy, about 18, who's begging for food/money from people outside a church one Sunday morning...and the only person who will stop to help him is "Rose", who runs a "late evening business" and is scorned and looked down upon by the town. Rose (predictably) takes the boy in and takes him into her bed.
So, y'know...maybe set it the mid-to-late 1800's. Jared's recently orphaned, he's 17/18, old enough to take care of himself but no one will give him the chance to try. (And as the song lyrics go, "and an 18yr old boy has got to eat".) Jensen, who isn't a lot older, maybe 23 or so, but has made a name for himself with a saloon/whorehouse (as well as catering to less-than-accepted appetites). He's wealthy and doing well, and everyone in town looks down at him. He takes Jared in, and then takes him into his bed, and they fall in love and have obstacles to overcome and lots of angst, and yes.
So. Any takers? Or do I have to add this to the list of things to (eventually) write myself? (Or both, even *g*)
Huh. Is
spn_harlequin going to do another round? *g*

And our boys would be great in it too. It's about Deadwood and Wild Bill and Calamity Jane and Al Swearengen and Seth Bullock and the wild west and gold mining and women and men and politics and whores and stupidity and guns and horses and loyalty and mud and love and sex and honour and IT'S SO GOOD. There's three seasons, each one brilliant.

Somehow, I don't think they ever really listened to the good ol' Statler lyrics, hmm?
