Kripke's take on fandom's reaction to S3 (casting) spoilers: link goes to TV Guide Online (DOES contain some general casting spoilers, so avoid if that's not your thing, but also, imo, puts a lot of questions and concerns to rest.)

Link gakked from [livejournal.com profile] lyra_wing. Thanks, honey.

I think somebody should sit this guy down and explain to him, in very definite terms and with no room for mistake, that a very large percentage of 'the fans' are only going to be interested in the big revelation surrounding whatsherface there is it turns out she's a GUY and that she/he'll then go after one of the main characters romantically. I swear his life would be so much easier. ;-)

I think it's more like a small but easily provoked percentage. This is where things can start to go so badly wrong for a show, if writers start catering to the demands of the loudest segment of fandom.

Sometimes I wish that more producers would take the Russell T Davies approach and say 'No, I don't listen to the fans at all. They're all crazy, and this is *my* show'.

ROFL! I think you're right..... after all In Joss We Trust [Even When It Appears All Is Lost]. I do think therer aren't nearly as many shows around where whomever speaheads it creatively is as trustworthy as that, which is a shame.

Thanks for linking this; whatever he ends up doing, it sure feels good to hear his willingness to respect fans of the show, and pay attention to natural developments of characters. I can't say I'd trust his judgement at all times, but his heart's in the right place.

Sounds very good indeed, although the idea that it's going to be more demon war plot makes me slightly nervous. I've never enjoyed those episodes as much as the monster-of-the-week ones, which always feel freer and pacier to me. But I'm all over the idea of female characters who have their own lives and plots and who aren't defined primarily by their relationships to male characters. That sounds excellent, and a great addition to the show's dynamic. I really hope the writers can manage it. A depressingly large number of female characters on TV start off like that, but quickly lose all their individuality and turn into cookie-cutter girlies who do nothing but talk about the male characters.
