Future!Dean wasn't wearing the amulet, either. So, done on purpose, one more thing to show just how bad it had gotten, to show the division, the rift between Sam and Dean? Or just a detail that got passed over and forgotten?
Castiel was using it to find God when he accidentally dropped it down a sewer grate. He contacted the city as well as the water department to explain that he needed their resources to recover his magical, God-finding amulet and was eventually taken into protective custody pending a commitment hearing. (Which ended favorably; however, the amulet was long gone by that point.)
The show is paying no attention to the defining traits of its lead characters, or the canon it already has built....they probably don't even remember the necklace exists anymore.
I thought about that, and I figured it showed the rift between Sam and Dean. When Dean said he hadn't talked to Sam in five years, my jaw had literally hit the floor because it was just so... wrong, I guess. Just wrong. D:
I can't imagine that detail being glossed over when Dean made such a big fuss about the necklace to begin with.
