This is Stargate SG-1, and it contains major character death, and I don't ever read it that I don't end up bawling...but it is one of the most beautiful stories around, and one of the few not-happy stories that I willingly re(re-re-re-re)read.

It's an AU story, set in the fourth/fifth seasons and spoiling Tin Man, Double Jeopardy, Forever in a Day, and the Stargate movie. Pairings are Jack/Daniel and Daniel/other.

If you've never read it, give it a read. If you have, read it again. Such a gorgeous story.

Somewhere I have a list of the dozen-stories-I-never-want-to-be-without; it's a pan-fandom list, borne of a dozen plus years IN various fandoms. This story is on that list, has been on that list for years and years (some of the stories change; a few never do). It's beautiful, hopeful, sad, bittersweet, and absolutely incredible to read. You get a full range of emotions, from humor to anger to sadness to joy.

Gone Fishin' by [livejournal.com profile] kaiz.

After saving the world again, Jack finally gets to go fishing. Takes place immediately following: Small Victories. Jack/Thor, Jack/OMC, Jack/Daniel (UST), Drama/Fantasy/Romance, Rated R. [237k]

Now, before you go "ew" or "what?!" at the pairings, I'm going to say suspend disbelief, or whatever and give it a chance. Because it is SO worth it.

A snippet: The narrow dirt track between the trees was also familiar. He paused to fondly stroke the rough bark of a lightning-struck oak, tracing the initials he'd triumphantly carved one late summer evening, the night he'd lost his virginity -- the first time. Here and there, the waning sunlight flashed off a broken bottle or beer can. These woods were littered with the remains of a million secret adolescent trysts. Somebody scored a twelve-pack, somebody borrowed mom's station wagon, somebody rounded up the crew, and everybody hoped like hell to get lucky. Some few even did. Jack smiled, remembering.

The days and nights had seemed to stretch out forever then, an endless summer of youth, with infinite time for everything, to realize every possibility.

But that was before the bitter winter that he first learned what love truly was. Before he'd lived the knowing of it and learned the nuances between friends, brothers. And lovers. Before he'd known that a man could measure his love by the depth of his grief. And by his willingness to walk through hell to spare his loved ones pain. Or to turn back time, if only for an instant.

Jack blinked rapidly then continued towards the shore, deciding to savor this improbable, bittersweet illusion a while longer.

And it just gets better from there :) [livejournal.com profile] kaiz brings Jack's past to brilliant life for us, and gives us an astonishingly believable glimpse into Thor's past, as well, and the whole story is just gorgeous.

Go, read, and be sure to let the author know you enjoyed it :)

Still hanging out in the Dark Angel end of town :) And because I was asked for some recs/links, here we go:

Alec/Ames White

Yeah, I know. It shouldn't work. But I've found two (only two *sob*) stories where the author makes it work so well it's incredible.

Alive - by [livejournal.com profile] runedgirl (the Lynsey half *g*)

This is a stunning piece of fiction. It's hot, twisted, angsty, painful; an absolutely beautiful story. *draws hearts around it*

Chimera - by [livejournal.com profile] jaguarcaine. (Note: Mpreg)

Also an incredible story that will break you apart and then put you back together again. And hell, if Manticore could make Gill Girls and Lizard Men, why not men who could get pregnant?

Sam/Alec (xover with Supernatural)

Nine Lives, Cat's Eyes - by [livejournal.com profile] veronamay. This is hot like fire, but it's threaded with bittersweet and tears. My favorite of the Sam/Alec stories.

Pillars of Salt - by [livejournal.com profile] crazywritinfool. This is the first of two stories in a (sadly) unfinished series; the link takes you to the part one of story one.

Sam's pain from missing Dean is a palpable, physical thing all through the story.

Until Morale Improves, the Beatings Will Continue - also by [livejournal.com profile] crazywritinfool. This is the second story in the Pulseverse.

Me and My Shadow - by [livejournal.com profile] rivers_bend. Awesome, awesome Alec-voice. Hot, sexy, bittersweet.

Mortal Wounds - by [livejournal.com profile] thecoinbikini. Small bit of what was supposed to have been a larger/longer story; I don't think the author ever finished it, unfortunately.

Another Looking Glass and it's sequel, The Broken Mirror - by [livejournal.com profile] albydarned. The first is Sam/Dean/Alec; the second is primarily Sam/Alec.

*sighs* And this concludes our tour through Kim's favorite (slash) Dark Angel and Dark Angel/Supernatural stories. I have some Max/Alec stuff bookmarked on Delicious; just look for the pairings. (I have to be in a certain mood to read Max/Alec, and I haven't read any in a while.)

Hope y'all enjoy--and for god's sake, if anyone sees this and knows of some that I've missed, PLEASE let me know :)

Stopped At The Crossroads - by [livejournal.com profile] dark_reaction. It's a/u, and it's raw and hopeful and so incredibly good that I'm still sitting here, wanting to cry just to get it out of my system.

The author's summary: There are no demons, only night terrors. There are no funerals, only family in-fighting. What would Sam and Dean be like in a world without demons?

Sometimes when Sam is upset he gets grim, silent, and jittery. Dean finds the old air mattresses that they took on Boy Scout trips and takes the crappy black Styrofoam loveseat in their room and makes a fort out of it. His Speed Racer sheets partition them off from the rest of the world. They lie inside and watch the light from the window make patterns on the sheets, no younger brothers are allowed.

Mom lets them leave the fort up these days, even though she really wants to tell them to take it down. They crawl in, careful not to knock anything that would send the whole thing tumbling to the floor, and listen to the radio. Dean’s knuckles brush Sam’s and he smiles.

This is just an absolutely gorgeous story. Go read it, and be sure to tell the author that you liked it.
