sometimes saying "people are stupid" just isn't enough

One California bigot/elected official has solved the problem of not being able to pick and choose whom her office marries by just not marrying anyone. Her claims that this is about staff and budget are just a tad undercut by the fact that she's referring people to the Alliance Defense Fund, an anti-gay organization that has announced its intention to, "defend any clerk who exercises his or her right not to perform wedding ceremonies under California law."

Once again, the sheer spite of these people amazes me.

I find it appalling that people can hate/fear something so much that they'd go to these lengths to prevent a joyous thing so many of us take for granted. And I really want to ask them why do they hate/fear it? I just don't get it.

Since when does the county clerk and not the treasurer's office decide what the budgetary concerns are? It's a good thing she's got some fellow bigots lined up to defend her. She's gonna need it.

It's now a legal requirement of her job. Do it or resign.

I think they're most likely afraid that gays will improve upon the stunning success rate of heterosexual marriage. (U.S. divorce rate: 55%.)

Y'know, speaking as part of that statistic for the stunning success rate of heterosexual marriage...all I can say is it'd be nice to see people staying married REGARDLESS of who they're married to. Is it asking too much to just be happy for others, because something happy-making is happening to them?

a couple ppl on my flist have mentioned a movement by ordained folks to preform marriages (gay and straight) in the rural counties that have cancelled all civic ceremonies. they're hoping it gets across the message to the straight folks that it's not the gays stopping them from getting married -- it's the county clerks.
