Six years and counting
Mar. 12th, 2008 09:59 amToday's my LJ-versary. Six years, y'all. Six.Years.
Not bad for someone who swore up and down she didn't need an LJ account, hmm?

I got on LJ specifically because of popslash. I had no other interest in it, and honestly didn't want it even for that--I managed to hold out for more than two months, in spite of
shinetheway's persistant "you need to get on LJ! That's where everything happens!", before caving. "mickeym" was a reflection of how I felt about the whole idea of an online journal/community: it's mickey mouse! I'm not interested!
Hah. THAT kind of came back to bite me in the ass, didn't it? Since LJ is now (to me) only slightly less essential than breathing. Yeah.
My time on LJ may have started off originally just so I could access stories and whatnot posted, but it's developed into so much more. And I say this periodically; anyone who's read my journal for a while has heard it before: LJ for me is a place to vent, to share, to find comfort and friendship and offer the same. It's a sounding board, social outlet, information source, entertainment source, message board and forum for many different topics. I've found friends I met eons ago, when fandom was still largely on Usenet messageboards and rediscovered friends from past mailing list fandoms.
You all have helped me broaden my musical horizons, recced books and movies I never would've touched otherwise, and provided countless hours of entertainment through fanfiction, songvids, con reports, music and video uploads. Even when I can't go to an event, I always feel as though I'm there vicariously, because everyone is so generous about sharing photos and video. Through LJ I've become more aware of things that affect me -- politics, feminism, parenting, education, charitable organizations. I've had the opportunity to get involved at levels and by doing things I'm comfortable with and don't feel overwhelmed by.
You've supported me through some of the worst moments of my life, and provided me with some of the best (I will forever and ever cherish the two weeks I spent in England, with
nopseud, and I will never forget that even when my own family failed me, y'all stepped up to the plate with help and support). I've been hurt badly in the past by some here on LJ, but y'know, life hurts sometimes. More than anything, when I think of LJ I think of all the friends I have -- casual and otherwise -- and the feelings of acceptance and welcome, and love that I get from them.
I've been active in online fandom since February or March of 1996, when I stumbled -- totally by accident -- upon an FTP archive of Star Trek stories and was instantly addicted. Of those 12 years? The most satisfying have been the six years I've been here.
Thank you, to everyone who contributes to the LJ experience. I think I'll stick around for a good, long while, yet. I'm sure it'll be an interesting ride :)
