captain's log, supplemental
Mar. 8th, 2011 10:22 pmFirst things first. Huge thank yous and hugs to
brighton_girl,
locknkey, and
britomart_is for the v-gifts. You all are so sweet for thinking of me :)
My one indulgence with my income tax money was getting the four seasons of Star Trek: Enterprise, and Matthew and I burned through those like you wouldn't believe. I wish there'd been more than just the four seasons -- I was really attached to the crew of the first Enterprise. Also, while I loved almost every episode, I really didn't care for the very last one. It could have been so much more than it was.
Anyway.
I am terribly behind on responding to comments and emails. I'm hoping to get caught up on both of those in the next day or so.
Last Friday I had to go down to the unemployment office because only part of my check came through. Found out that my federal benefits have now expired, and I'm at the third, and final, tier: emergency extended benefits. I have 20 weeks of unemployment left, period. Does it even need to be said that I have no intention of telling anyone in my family when my unemployment ends? :-/
Matthew failed the first term of Algebra II (A), so the sophomore counselor took him out of Algebra II (B), saying there was no point in him being in that one if he didn't understand/pass the first part. Which makes sense, I suppose...but it means he now has to double up on math courses his junior year: he'll have to retake Algebra II along with taking Geometry. *sigh* When we get closer to the new school year I'm going to contact the local community college and see if they have any students studying special ed/education who might be interested in tutoring 2-3x/week. It's about the only thing I can think of. If anyone has any other suggestions, I'm all ears.
I'm in need of some technical assistance on a couple of subjects for my Big Bang. Medical and legal, mostly general questions. I'm going to do a separate postbegging asking for some assistance, so it doesn't get buried in this post. But if you have medical or legal experience and would be willing to answer a bunch of questions for me, drop me an email at ohmickeym at gmail dot com, or PM me :)

http://www.khanacademy.org/
It's some guy who started out making little videos on algebra etc for some young relatives, and now there are THOUSANDS of lessons (step by step) starting with the basics and going on to trig and whatever. I found the vids quite easy to follow (kind of filmed blackboards) and I'm not really mathematically gifted at all. I guess the advantages are: feels like fun because it's on the computer, can be repeated as many times with as many pauses as needed, also FREE. Anyway, check it out, if you haven't. I never actually tried to substantially learn something off it (it was shown to me as an example of what we might aim for when working on our digital learning tool for performance studies). But I was impressed :)

Thinking of you!
