Senate Passes Bill to Teach Bible in KY Schools

They're talking about elective classes, which means probably high school, but why does it have to come down to legislation? There's nothing saying that high schools couldn't offer a class now, so why do this? Do the senators, etc., not have enough on their plates already? My state has (like so many other states) a HUGE budget deficit -- why isn't someone working on figuring out how to fix that?

I don't have a problem with the 'teaching the bible' per se. I took History of the Old Testament and History of Christianity when I was attending UofL, and enjoyed both of them. But down here, to a great many, bible = religion, and there's already enough mixing of church/religion and state stuff as it is. (Example: Matthew's health class in 8th grade had a brief bit of sex ed. Birth control was: don't have sex. Period.)

There's a poll on that page, do you think the bible should be taught in schools, Yes, No, Not Sure. 75% of the votes -- some 400+ have voted yes. *sigh*

All this brought to you courtesy of the state that tied up its state supreme court docket with "we demand to be allowed to display the Ten Commandments outside our local courthouses".

Wanting to reiterate here: NOT trying to diss the bible, or religion. I just don't think they're things that need mixing in with public education and government.

You should be in Arkansas. The Legislature sticks its nose into everything about the schools from lunch menus to maintenance. The only thing they don't want to legislate is a raise in teacher salaries. m :)

I think it would be very, very bad to live any further south than I already do *g* Bad for my blood pressure, in any case.

If private schools want to teach bible, religion, what-have-you, fine. But the taxes I pay are for public schools, and I don't feel that that's something that needs to be added to a high school curriculum. Particularly given they keep cutting funding for arts and things of that nature.

Plus I see this as one more way to create a HUGE to-do over religion in general, because then someone will be yelling why aren't they teaching the Qur'an, or the Torah, etc. *sigh*

I'm guessing you're a teacher, based on your last sentence. And funny, isn't it, how raising salaries is almost always the last thing anyone considers?

1) I would say "come to California!" except California is a clusterfuck of bankruptcy and corruption.

2) I, on the other hand, am PERFECTLY willing to diss both the bible and religion!

If my taxes are funding schools, the curriculum had better not be teaching subjects I consider the job of parents and churches. Schools are to educate, not indoctrinate. Adults graduating from these schools are going to attempt to work and compete in sciences and mathmatics and social theory with people from all over the world who have been educated in accepted facts. Your research isn't going to be successful if it's founded on the Christian version of science.

My middle school had a pretty decent health class, but it was focused on abstinence and there was a pretty graphic video showing a woman giving birth.

Considering how many teenage pregnancies happened at my HS (aborted or carried to term), it's pretty obvious that wasn't the way to deal with it.

In fact, one of my elementary school friends came to me in HS because she had no one else to talk to...she'd been convinced that wearing the patch during and following sex for a day was enough. *facepalm*

I don't understand. How can this be constitutional? Isn't it a clear violation of "separation of church and state"?
