Thing the first: I owe comments, big time. Raise your hand if you're surprised. I'll be doing that tomorrow, but in the interim, THANK YOU to everyone who responded to my post about Matthew's idiocy. I really appreciate the support.

Thing the second: WHY is K-Mart open for seven hours on Thanksgiving day? Pre-Black Friday sale, wtf? You know, a lot of people like to say that gay marriage is the downfall of this country, of civilization, etc., but honestly? I think it's shit like having a major chain store open on what's supposed to be a family day. I'm old enough to remember when nothing was open on Sundays (it was a Big Deal when the malls started being open from noon to five on Sundays), and when you were *damn* lucky to find a gas station and/or convenience store open on Thanksgiving and Christmas. It just really bugs me. Obviously.

Thing the third: We're supposed to have a high of 70F on Thanksgiving; the high on Friday (my birthday! *g*) is supposed to be 36F. o_O

Thing the fourth: I'm incredibly amused by the fact that come Friday, Matthew and I will once again be the same age. See? He's 16, so 1+6=7 and I will be 43, which is 4+3=7. Pretty cool, huh? Yes, I'm a geek, thank you. :)

Thing the fifth: There was a story on the nightly news tonight about a stripper who was raped and physically assaulted. The soundbite before the actual story was just that: a stripper was raped, etc. So I'm expecting a story about some dude who thought he was owed more than just a lapdance or whatever. No. What I got was two women who worked at the same strip club together, one of whom thought the other had stolen (something, money maybe) from her. So she drove to the presumed-thief's house, threatened her at gunpoint, restrained her, stole some money from her, cut her with a sharp object and then sexually assaulted her with said sharp object.

Nice, huh? People really just suck. Period.

1 - Evidently, I have missed the idiocy post? EEK

2 - Seriously? They're open? What is wrong with people? We have little more than convenience stores open Thursday.

3 - It's 37 now. It wasn't much higher during the day today. LOVE this time of year.

4 - WAY cool

5 - Some people make me sick. :/

1. http://mickeym.livejournal.com/1305774.html

2. I guess they are. I don't plan to check for sure if the one here in Etown is open, but yeah.

3. It's...67F right now. It was 74 today, but very, very windy. We have rain coming in now. It's like spring, except for how it looks like late fall outside.

4. I thought so :)

5. YES.

My 2 cents on thanksgiving is I like the idea of giving thanks for one's blessings, but the US thanksgiving is awfully tied up with issues about genocide of indigenous people, so I'd rather do my own harvest-y celebration thingy without it being a national thing.

and i'm not christian, so having things open on 25 dec back when the body wasn't housebound was lovely.

Yes, re: the genocide of indigenous people, but what I liked -- still like -- is the family/friends gathering together to share time and make memories together. I wouldn't care if the day was moved to March and named "A Day to Count Blessings" or whatever -- I like the idea of a day set aside where no one has to work or be somewhere, save for emergency responders and family/friends can gather together.

As for the Christmas thing...I'm only nominally Christian as that goes, and yeah, it's nice to have places open if you're NOT celebrating that day as a holiday. (Or even if you are and you need something last minute.) I'm sure there's always been stuff open in bigger cities, ones that had more diversity in their population. I'm just going on things I remember, and good memories, before my family stuff got SO complicated and convoluted. Chicken-soup memories, if you will -- combined with my annoyance that all the people who want to blame gays and muslims and whoever else on the "decreasing family values" in this country don't seem to realize (or care, if they do) that it's nothing to do with two men or two women getting married, or whatever. There's a breakdown somewhere further up and far more critical.

Anyway. The whole post was really stream-of-consciousness stuff as they rolled across my television tonight, and/or thoughts in my head at about the same time.
