I got a rather disturbing email from Comcast (my internet provider). If any of y'all who are computer/internet/file-sharing savvy would care to take a look at this and tell me what the hell it means, I would appreciate it.

The main thing I don't understand...this "IWANNACOWNLOAD.com", is that the site supposedly that I'm downloading from? Or contributing to? Because until I got this email, I'd never heard of the site. Also, the "report date/time" is listed as 4 Oct 2010, 19:22, but the "Initial Infringement Timestamp" is four hours *later*. I'm very confused. So, thoughts, comments, anything?

Do you have wireless? I wonder if someone else was using your connection? Otherwise, call them.

I do have wireless, and it's not password-protected, so it's possible. Hmm.

Yeah, guess I'm going to have to. I would email them, except in all the contact info there's NO EMAIL ADDRESS. Urgh.

Yeah, it sounds to me like someone leeched off your connection to download this whatever it was. Definitely contact them - and password protect your connection.

That's what I'm thinking, too. You should be able to set a password for your wireless router pretty easily.

Here's hoping. Stupid people. I don't mind sharing my wireless, but I DO mind potentially getting in trouble for someone else!

I did call them (and waited on hold for like, 15 min. before I got a live person, geez) and explained to the very nice guy what I think happened. He said he would note it in the file, and there wouldn't be any repercussions (unless it happens again). And yeah, someone dl'd a recently-released movie, which, geez.

So now I gotta figure out password protecting my router. Gyah.

Well, that's good anyway.

Good luck with the passwording. Each router is different, but maybe you can Google it? :D

Mine ISN'T passworded, but we're also very rural and literally no one is close enough to mooch off me. :D

Surely your internet provider would help you with the password protection. Mine helps me with all that stuff (then again, they won Best Customer Service many years in a row, I just assume this is standard help).

If you can't figure it out yourself, definitely ask your internet provider.

actually more than possible, it's really common these days for folks to leech off other connections.

Meh. I don't mind sharing the connection -- I've done it before, on occasion, while visiting my dad. I DO mind someone doing something that could get me in trouble, while using my connection.
