Is anyone else caught between laughing hysterically and squirming in abject embarrassment?

I'm kind of repelled. It's masturbatory. It's funny, but it's not the show. It's the show admiring itself. That makes me really uncomfortable.

Becky is making me uncomfortable.

Plus, the fat and skinny guy pretending to be Sam and Dean, talking with the raspy voices is making my throat hurt. Ouch.

Becky is a caricature. It's not flattering, and IMO not meant to be.

The problem with this type of ep -- which the show seems ENTIRELY overly fond of this season -- is that it suggest Becky is precisely how fans of the show are perceived. Strange. Over the top. Laughable.

Anyone who thinks this is FUNNY is flattering themselves, badly. I'm just pretty shocked it would be this defamatory. How offensive. So in exchange for being good fans we get ridiculed? I'm sure they'll give it some sort of apologetic ending, but that doesn't change the rest.

What a huge finger to the fandom.

I want to hear your anger, but I also want to speak from a position of not being offended, in case a positive voice would help you.

I'll take your point that Becky is a caricature, and even, that she is strange, over the top, and Laughable. At the same time, though, in this episode her extreme fannishness allows her to pass on a key piece of knowledge that even Chuck had forgotten. Also, the fan boys save Dean and Sam from being killed by the ghosts?

If you read it as defamatory, I'm sorry that it has hurt you. But can't you also read it as a way of saying, "WE KNOW OUR FANS LOOK CRAZY, BUT HERE WE ARE IN SEASON FIVE!!!"

Is it really jumping the shark if you never come down?

I am a 41 year old fangirl, my name is fannishliss, and that is ben edlund's Man Eating Cow in my icon!! :) I 've been fannish for way longer than it's been cool....

hugs to you, and a polite deflecting of that finger

I read a review of the episode on some entertainment blog that actually thought Kripke was saying something along the lines of "hey fans, we know you're kindof kooky about our show, but we couldn't have done this without you" with the final scenes of Becky giving them the info and Dean realizing how their lives don't suck as much as they thought.

I mostly just find it interesting that people are reacting so differently to these meta-laden episodes. For me, I just want to be entertained by the show every week. I was entertained with this episode, so I'm satisfied. Maybe I'm easy. lol

Actually, the embarrassment can't quite get a foothold through the laughter. Otherwise, yes.

Or--actually, I'd be more embarrassed if it weren't so fucking accurate. [snortgiggles] I mean, you know that if there was a SPN Creation Con, THESE PEOPLE WOULD BE THERE.

I truly HATE episodes like this and have it turned down to barely background noise.

I'm finding it pretty hilarious... since I do know the's a ton of fans like that out there. It's kind of a perfect episode just before actually going to a con, too. XD

I have no idea what's happening, because after the VERY FIRST TIME Becky screamed "SAAAAM!" I turned the show off. Fuck this shit.

sorry, I posted in the wrong box.... anyways, I think the way it ended went a long way towards justifying how it began.... and though Becky is pretty weird, I'm not throwing any stones because I so live in that house!! And she gives a big awesome reveal at the end.... which is able to give because of her extreme fannish attention to detail. So, as per show, Becky and the Fan Boys save the day! Not so derogatory really in that regard.

The first half was funnily horrifying, and the last half rocked it out.

I laughed pretty hard.

Turned it off. First few times were funny. Boring and sort of holier than thou, now.

I liked it. I was annoyed that so many of the fans were boys, because, HELLO! Let's just take a look at the crowd this weekend in Chicago, shall we? But at least, some of them were girls dressed as boys, so that was fun, because I've watched at least one really awesome video that two girls dressed as Samndean posted on youtube.... I don't think Larpers are psychos... I'm not a larper only because I get tonguetied. ... The way Becky could be better, in my opinion, is if there were a dozen of her, so that more of our spectrum could be represented.... the way it ended, I thought it was pretty awesome that Sam and Dean WERE ACTUALLY SAVED BY FANS, and then when Becky gave them the awesome reveal about the Colt that Even Chuck had forgotten, that was pretty cool.

Thanks Kim -- I haven't been commenting for a while, but you are a great person and I always read your posts even when I am being silent.

I loved it. But then again, I barely dip my toe in the SPN fandom. I wanted to enjoy the series without getting sucked into drama and fandom-overreaction (which happens in EVERY fandom). As it stands, it's one of the best choices I made, because I can just sit back and enjoy the show without worrying too much one way or the other.
