One of our CACU (Crimes Against Children Unit) detectives came in today, to bring a computer back and sign a release for another one, and said "at least I'm not bringing anything new in. That'll be next month, I'm executing 15 search warrants."
Yikes.
Dan's primary job detail is kiddie porn. His job (ugh) is to hang out online and visit places/chatrooms/whatever to find people who are giving/selling child porn (pictures, movie clips). He gets the pictures, and then he also gets the IP addresses, and it goes from there. (The most distressing about this is he says 15 search warrants is just small fry. He can network with as many as 100 pedophiles at a go, all sharing this stuff.)
But, what he told me today, that I thought I would share with y'all is this: the kiddie porn dealers/distributors are getting sneaky (sneakier?). Now they're starting to embed the kiddie porn into OTHER files, that seemingly have nothing at all to do with child pornography. Mp3 files, in particular, are being embedded with other files (which apparently don't affect the file's ability to play AS an mp3) and he said that peer-to-peer software such as LimeWire and Kaaza are the worst.
Now, I'm not saying OMG STOP USING LIMEWIRE, but I felt like I should share that with y'all, to decide for yourselves what to do with the information. I doubt every .mp3 file on Limewire has kiddie porn embedded in it, but if you happen to download something that does and it gets redistributed, and then traced back to you...well, it could be at the least potentially embarrassing, not to mention expensive, to get that straightened out.
It kind of weirds me out to realize every so often, that I'm actually going to miss aspects of my job -- and of the property room.

Date: 2009-07-22 12:32 am (UTC)Ugh, though, the thought of the contents of my computer being rifled through by some cop or whatever does distress me, and there's nothing illegal on there as far as I know. But it's private! It's like my brain-handbag. D:
I actually think there's a thriller/screenplay in the story of your guy who does the kid-porn. Because it would be the perfect cover for being a dodgy guy. OR, perhaps the moral dubiousness of being "undercover" in that way could be really interesting as a development for the central character.
Can you tell I'm distracted at work. I'm going to stop commenting now! :)
