But I'm probably not a good person to ask ;) I fail at anything musical, and the concept of soundtracks to fics doesn't make sense to my brain, so I usually just ignore them. In fact, I don't think I've ever actually listened to one! *g*

*laughs* Well, I always have a "soundtrack" (for lack of a better expression) that I listen to while I'm writing a story... or usually, anyway. And I dunno if that should/does translate into 'sountrack for the story'... and yeah. I am WAY overthinking this. Hello, welcome to my brain on procrastination... :P

For me, soundtracks are all about what I am listening to when I'm writing, what songs/artists seem to reflect the characters and the moods I need to be in to write. I tend to go to either songs or quotes from books (usually Buddhist ones) as epigraphs, inspiration, for titles, and also to listen to when I'm writing. I have different mixes on my iPod for different stories. Right now I'm all about the Hip and the Decemberists for this Southland-Homicide fusion, especially the Hip's lastest album, which I have going in my car cd player.

I've only ever tried to post an actual soundtrack for a story once, and I don't think I actually uploaded the songs right, so I'm not sure anyone even got it--but I couldn't have written that story without those songs.

(P.S. My answer to the second question is actually I think a good soundtrack is either EP or LP length, that is about 40-80 minutes depending on story length. ~5k = EP, 10-20k = LP)

I dunno if this is a helpful answer at all, but I'm one of those rare types who can't listen to music while reading (I have the attention span of a 4-year-old), but I DO snag soundtracks for listening too independent of the fic. And I love to do that? :D?

Depends on the story! I have um, my own playlist for some kinds of fic (PORN!), and sometimes listen to a soundtrack if it's provided and I already like the music listed enough to actually take the time to download it. I've dl'ed soundtracks that were completely dissonant with the fic, and made me wonder wtf was up, buuuut for the most part, people take enough time to make it fic the piece, and it's all good. I tend to listen to music anyway while I read, so it doesn't matter too much? I just realized I have NO IDEA what my point is here.

As far as I can remember, I have never listened to a soundtrack for a fic, nor even looked at the tracks. I dl people's soundtracks that they've made for spn or j2 or life or love or whatever, all the time, but I just don't think of reading or writing in terms of music because if I'm doing either, the music is off. To me it would be like listening to music while watching TV. The only time I can listen to music while I'm writing is if I'm on a bus or train and wanting to drown out the yammering away of the other riders, and then I have a special mix of songs that are pretty mellow and that I know so well they just blend into white noise.

The only Soundtrack I've ever made wasn't so much a soundtrack as it was a mix CD one character *gave* to another. I never download soundtracks so I'm not really a good person to ask...
