I work with people who must come from a different planet, or something. One coworker says she's not going to vote in the upcoming election, because Hillary didn't make it for the nomination, and she "has no interest in Obama". My other female coworker says she "doesn't do" elections. And my male coworker was awed and weirded out today by the fact that I knew of the word "plumage", and what it meant. (I was awed and weirded out that he DIDN'T, but that's another story.)

I've tried telling my coworkers how important it is to vote -- particularly my female coworkers -- but they don't want to hear it. And other than beating them upside the head with a blunt object, I don't know what else to say/do. (Any suggestions are welcome, btw.)

Matthew came home with 10394814098124089 pages of (makeup) homework, a note from his spec ed teacher about scheduling a meeting to discuss re-eval/testing (joy), and his mid-term progress report which shows he's currently failing English. *headdesk* The note on the report from his teacher says he's missing a lot of assignments. Matthew assures me it's just the ones he missed last week, but I have trouble believing that four days' worth -- when they knew he was out sick -- could take his grade to an F. So, since I have to call his teacher anyway... Oi.

Spent an hour and a half doing spelling/language arts homework. Good lord, it's like *I'm* repeating the 8th grade. o_O

MANY thanks to [livejournal.com profile] drvsilla for the carnation! I needed that pick-me-up today, particularly after getting home to the school-related disaster(s). That was awfully sweet of you :) *hugs*

I can't even IMAGINE being so passive about my government that I would ever consider not voting. I just... It's absolutely mind boggling.

Many of my RL friends will say, "Oh, I don't really keep up..." :(

Gah. That kind of apathy just drives me insane, although it's better than a vote for McCain, I guess. Sigh.

Not voting for Obama is like voting for McCain/Palin. Does the one who likes Hillary REALLY want to support the Republican party's shallow attempt to grab votes based entirely on genitalia? (I.e. you are not voting FOR Obama, you are voting AGAINST McCain/Palin. Because dear god, I do not want her as the first woman anything. It'll take us another hundred years to get another woman even nominated!)

And I don't get how you can not do elections. They decide all kinds of things about the world we live in. (Perhaps I am just a control freak.)

not voting just isn't an option in my world - going and spoiling your ballot paper as a protest, maybe, although fat lot of good that will do anyone, but - not caring enough to vote? The hell??

I'm in NYC and most people are registered Democrats, however they are still conservative. No matter what Obama says a lot of middle age, middle class voters want very little change (you know just fix our bank accounts). So many of the people I've spoken to feel they either betray the party and vote Republican or vote for something they don't believe in. This is way plenty are choosing to stay home.

The lowering of gas prices, the decision of the OPEC not to cut production and the lowering of the Euro that has happened in the past 10 days will end up changing the position of some of those Democrats and they'll end up voting Republican.

i wrote up a long comment about how not wanting to vote for the lesser of two evils AGAIN, fuck, does not make be stupid or 'passive about my government' or even unamercian, but it's just not worth it. sadly. :/

IMO, if you don't vote, you can't complain.

I like to complain. ;>

Srsly, no candidate is ever going to be a perfect fit. Although I'd love to be an idealist (again), I'm afraid that a practical approach is the only way to try to get even a portion of those issues I believe are important considered in a national forum, much less passed. People who don't vote aren't (necessarily) less intelligent, but they *are* shooting themselves in the foot.

Thank you!

And I don't understand how people don't understand that things have to CHANGE, even without Hillary.

If your coworkers are the sort of people who have stickers on their cars talking about how "freedom isn't free," you could point out that one of those freedoms is the right (and duty) to vote.

But if they have those sort of stickers, they're likely to be Republicans, so. *shrug*

Best of luck with the conversation with the teachers. *hug!*
