A/N: - Okay. This piece is for thehighwaywoman, written into her By Any Other Name universe, and done with her permission. It follows up right after Push Back the Shadows. Zee, honey, this image was in my head all night. I hope it works for you. *hugs*







Dad taught them to be prepared for any possibility. For any eventuality. Taught them to plan, and be ready, and expect the unexpected. But there's unexpected, and then there's…never-in-a-million-years.

Dean feels confident that even Dad would've been thrown by this.

She's feather-light in his arms, a warm, clean-smelling bundle of nothing. She fits in the crook of one arm easily and turns in toward him, seeking warmth. Her eyes, dark blue with flecks of hazel in them, are only half open, and she regards him sleepily.

"Hey, little one," he whispers softly, searching her face for a sign of something. His brother, their father, their mother. Someone he recognizes. Beside him, Sam droops with exhaustion, the dark circles under his eyes giving them a hollowed-out look. Dean bumps his shoulder gently. "Get some sleep, Sammy."

"I can't—" He begins, frown already in place. Dean shakes his head.

"You can. I got her." And she's got me. Dean's never thought he believed in love at first sight, but he might have to revise his opinion on that.

Her eyes are slowly unfocusing, lids – still puffy and a little red from the indignities of birth – falling shut as she gives in to the siren call of sleep. She looks as exhausted as Sam, and Dean's left thinking his little brother is as much a stubborn idiot as their dad was.

She whimpers in her sleep, and Dean jiggles her gently, hand patting her rump in a slow, steady rhythm.

"That's my girl," he croons, shifting around until he can lean back against the headboard, one hand reaching for the sheets. "C'mon, Sam. Take a nap."

Dean's surprised when Sam doesn't put up a fight, simply sighs, "so much to do," even as he settles on the bed beside Dean.

"It'll wait. She's not going anywhere, and neither are we."

The not-so-quiet thump of Sam's boots hitting the floor makes her shudder in Dean's arms, and he shushes her very gently, murmuring sounds and nonsense as she settles more firmly into sleep. Beside him – them – Sam's curling under the blanket, eyes beginning to flutter shut even as he leans into Dean for a kiss. It's sweet and soft, the hunger that's so often there muted by sleep and (knowing Sam) fear.

He smiles reflexively, already mostly asleep, when Dean combs fingers through the ragged mop Sam calls his hair; when Dean trails them down the side of Sam's face. Maybe Dean even whispers "thank you" and "I love you", but Sam's asleep and Dean will deny it.

Yeah, this was completely unexpected, and it's going to take a while for Sam to stop freaking out about it, but it's okay. Everything's going to be okay.
