question for those who might know...

(former) High school band members: say you have Saturday practice. How long would a regular practice last? Ballpark figure.

some questions I need answers for

As they're relevant to my Big Bang. Anyone who can answer these will have my undying devotion :)

Life Insurance: in the event of a death (auto accident, not the policy holder's fault), how soon would the named beneficiary receive the payout? Is it paid as a lump sum, or in installments? Are taxes taken out of it, or does the beneficiary have to take care of that?

Auto Insurance: how would this work, if it's the fault of the other party? Would that party's insurance contact the survivors of the accident, or do the survivors have to do the contacting? Presumably doctor bills, etc., would be either paid up front or reimbursed by the party at fault?

Medical: you have a 16yr old brought to your ER. Both parents are dead; nearest surviving relative is on the way, but not expected for several hours. Patient is bleeding internally, in addition to a broken leg and assorted contusions, etc. Would the doctors take the patient into surgery w/out a signed consent form, rather than risk patient's life further? Or would they be forced to wait? Could the emergency (non-relative) contact give prelim consent for the surgery?

Any help is greatly appreciated :)

so, that Big Bang thing

I'm excited! Really! And slightly terrified, as per usual. *koff* My artist is going to be [livejournal.com profile] electricmonk333, and seems very cool. We've had good first contact, and hopefully the rough draft I sent wasn't too horrible. We got assigned a posting date of July 20, which is a very nice, right-in-the-middle date. I like that. Especially after my epic fail last year, when I had to ask for several extensions. *is embarrassed*

Anyway, under the cut are assorted details, summary and snippet, if you're so inclined to check them out. )

DONE DONE OMG I'M DONE!!

Done, finished, submitted!

I feel like I should add: I started at 2p this afternoon with a word count of roughly 8100 words. So, y'know, I wrote 12,000 words in about nine and a half hours. *falls over dead*

...into the abyss. Finally.

I've waffled back and forth, and wasn't even certain I was going to get started...but I have. Did. Something.

Big Bang progress:

It's not much, but it's a start, right? And who knows, I might even surprise myself and finish it on time.

a query and a poll

(Which I just typoed as 'pool', initially. Oi.)

So, Big Bang. I need to start getting started, and I thought I'd cemented in my mind what I was writing... and then [livejournal.com profile] annella comes along with her really cool idea, and now I'm torn. So, flist, help me figure it out. The ideas are as follows:

A. Pre-series-ish. Scenario is this: Mary didn't die. Sam and Dean are raised in a loving, stable home with two parents. When Sam is a senior in high school, the apocalypse comes. Happens. Whichever verb is applicable. Anyway, the sky rips open, fire rains down, zombies rise, all sorts of nifty things. Think... Red Dawn, but with zombies and the Croatoan virus. Kind of. Sam/Dean (does that need to be said?), definitely eventually; possibly from the start. So, in summary, a pre-series, non-series (a/u) apocalypse.

B. (This is [livejournal.com profile] annella's idea, taken with her blessing.) Post apocalypse. Both boys survive but Sam is seriously screwed up - the anger thing we saw in 5x11 plus, y'know, EVERYTHING ELSE. Dean finally acknowledges that he has to HELP his brother and that pushing it all down is the opposite of helpful. Sam ends up in a psychiatric ward where he actually gets HELPED. Because a lot of the actual apocalypse was extremely visible, he doesn't have much trouble getting doctors to believe him and they help him work through everything.

Dean doesn't tell Sam on his weekly visits, but he's started seeing a therapist too.

Both boys manage to work out their issues and live happily ever after in a small 2-bedroom apartment. Sam works at a library and Dean fixes cars. etc etc curtain fic. Also Sam/Dean, eventually. (And highly likely to get Joss'd/Kripke'd to hell and back -- no pun intended -- but whatever. To some extent everything we write is a/u, right? *g*)

So, ElJay. Help me decide what to write, because I am SERIOUSLY torn, here. I really kind of want to do both (and maybe will, who knows), but that's not feasible for right now.

riting iz hard :(

I've now reached the stage in my Big Bang where I can't even tell if I'm still making sense, if it works, if it's ever going to be FINISHED, anything.

*stabs BB* *stabs self*

And in truly exciting (plz note the sarcasm) news, we got another person down in the property room today. (Y'all will remember that we get the injured, the ones who are on light duty, administrative leave, in trouble, whatever, right?)

Now we have Lt. Fifer. Who's currently being charged with (among other things) domestic violence.

Call me crazy, but I think it's a BAD idea to bring someone facing those charges into a largely female populated work place.

A/N and Thank You's: This story is sort of like the marriage of two of my most favorite things: history and romance. It holds a special place in my heart as being probably the only story I've ever written that I didn't at some point (metaphorically) toss into the garbage can while screaming "God, I hate it!" It's my favorite of anything I've ever written, and I think it's probably some of my best work to date.

I got the idea for it back late last winter, or early this past spring, when one of my Workday Email Posse (hee) linked me to an article about a Russian couple who were married at the beginning of WWII and then got separated a few days later -- and she believe he was dead, and he couldn't find her, and they ended up apart for sixty years. When they found each other again, they said it was like those years hadn't ever happened; they were just as in love as they'd been. The big ol' sap in me went "AWWW!" and then I started thinking about a Sam and Dean version of that. :)

I owe huge thank you's to a lot of people: [livejournal.com profile] thenyxie, [livejournal.com profile] cormallen and [livejournal.com profile] nu_breed for hand-holding and audiencing, and just in general being there. To [livejournal.com profile] rivers_bend and [livejournal.com profile] leighm for beta-under-pressure (seriously--I sent the story to them like, Monday night, and the reworked ending last night), as well as hand-holding, and being there. Awesomeness all around :) Also thank you to my flist at large for helping me find links, and information, and putting up with my 10938140891 questions and word-count updates. (I feel like I should apologize for those, because normally? I could care less what the word count is. But y'all, I wrote SO MUCH, it just blew me away!) I also want to say, though he'll never (I hope!) see this, thank you to Matthew. He fetched tissues and cool drinks for me when I worked myself into sobbing while writing, and just in general encouraged me. ("Are you writing? Shouldn't you be writing? You're not done yet are you? How many more words until you're done?" - the kid makes a great nag.)

Thank you's need to go also to [livejournal.com profile] wendy and [livejournal.com profile] audrarose for coordinating all of this, and making it a very awesome experience. *hugs you*

Finally, many, many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] mkitty3, for the incredibly fabulous artwork she did for this story. She brought it to life for me.

I have a couple of footnotes/credit things, because I am deathly afeared of ever being accused of plagiarism. So, for Sam's commencement speech, I got the core of it from here: http://www.dominik.net/thoughts/valedictorian-speech.php3 and of course the "A day which will live in infamy" speech belongs to FKR and his speechwriters.

I really hope you've enjoyed reading this story. I loved writing it, and I'm thrilled to get to share it with y'all. Thank you :)
