I think the longwinded answer your questions are leading to is something ms_manna once told me in relation to her original fic, which was something along the lines of, "I only write the sex that needs to be there to advance the plot."
So, when I am writing these days (which admittedly isn't very much at the moment, at least not much that is publicly viewable) I am bored by and generally don't write PWP (don't really read it either). But I can and do include sex scenes when necessary for the plot, and I don't have trouble writing them.
