Lesbian Teen Sues To Force School To Hold Prom

JACKSON, Miss. — A lesbian student who wanted to take her girlfriend to her senior prom is asking a federal judge to force her Mississippi school district to reinstate the dance it canceled.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi on Thursday filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Oxford on behalf of 18-year-old Constance McMillen, who said she faced some unhappy classmates after the Itawamba County School District said it wouldn't host the April 2 prom.

One of the things that really stands out as inordinately stupid (even beyond the whole why-can't-two-girls-go-together) is that cross-dressing is an issue, because the girlfriend wanted to wear a tuxedo.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a tux is nothing more than a jacket and pants, right? And don't girls wear pants all the freakin' time?

I really wish there was a way to round up all the small-thinking, narrow-minded people and deposit them on a desert island somewhere. Or the moon. Somewhere far away, where their teeny, narrow thoughts aren't going to mess with the lives of those of us who can see that love is love, no matter the color or gender or anything else.

Huh. One of my friends wore a tux that matched her boyfriends to prom in high school. The tux thing is stupid.

SO is the rest but, yeah.

I heard about this earlier this morning. Unbelievable that they'd cancel the event... What is wrong with these people! How can they discriminate against a same sex couple? Wouldn't they allow a bunch of girls or guys who are friends go to prom together or is that not allowed either?

I'm pretty sure that there's a codicil that says any stag group has to pour vodka in the punch and go around trying to date-rape as many of the opposite sex as possible, or they're not allowed to any future school events. /sarcasm

At my school, the most flamboyant gay boy ever went in a dress and his bgf went in a tux and nobody did anything about it. Of course, they didn't advertise their plans, either.

Hey, a Catholic charity organization just denied benefits for all new hires (http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/sexist/2010/03/01/to-avoid-funding-gay-marrieds-catholic-charities-denies-benefits-to-all-spouses/) (straight or otherwise) to avoid giving those zomg evil depraved married gay couples benefits. Just like they ended their adoption charity work (http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2006/03/11/catholic_charities_stuns_state_ends_adoptions/) to avoid giving needy kids a home with married gay couples.

So, I guess I am no longer shocked by how low bigots will stoop to go out of their way to treat gay folks like second class citizens. I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that these school administrators were hoping that this girl's outraged classmates would apply some 'peer pressure' to convince her and her gf to stay home so that the prom could proceed.

*is deeply bitter*

I know it was nearly 20 years ago now, but for my prom, you could only buy tickets in sets of two. no single tickets could be sold. You got a date, or you couldn't go. You didn't have to name your date or anything, and I doubt they would have not let you in if two girls or two guys had shown up together, but I don't actually know. I remember thinking it was pretty discriminatory against single people, though.

What if I violated a Man’s rectum with a rubber phallus? Would that blow your mind? was the best thing I got out of that first link. If I hadn't heard that Alexander Skaarsgard was going gay in True Blood this year, it might have been the best thing I got out of this entire day! Bless you. XD

I was watching this report with my son, who actually got up off his chair to rant. I followed a moment later. I mean, seriously?? This is the most frightening thing schools can come up with to worry about? Instead of celebrating someone's happiness?? Argh.

Hope you're hanging in there, gf. *hugs*

Time's change. Me and a handful of friends all came together but bought tickets individually. Happens all the time.

Yeah, the whole thing makes me want to hurt someone on their behalf, but the tux issue was what made me sit up and go "BUH?" Because, really. Geez.

Someone further down commented about how the board, or council, or whoever was probably hoping it would come to a peer pressure thing, their friends saying "how could you do this to all of us?"

Me, I just don't understand why it has to be an issue at all. Half the time the kids are all just dancing in one big group anyway.

I really hate stupid, narrow-minded people. Grr.

*laughs* My prom was 25 years ago...and I didn't go anyway, so I don't have a clue how tickets could (or couldn't) be purchased, etc. But it does seem pretty stupid that you couldn't buy one single ticket. Geez.

(I also have this vague notion I need to preface this comment with "when dinosaurs roamed the earth..." *g*)

Yeah, I think part of the problem (for lack of a better way to phrase it) is telegraphing intent. Gives the assholes a chance to prepare a take-down. Unfortunately.

I really, really hate narrow-minded people. Really, REALLY.

It's mind-boggling, really, all the hoo-haw with the Catholic church. Priests who molest children for *decades* and get away with it, and only get shunted away somewhere away from kids as their 'punishment' is okay... but same-sex couples in a loving, stable relationship isn't?

What's wrong with this picture?

40 years! *g* And yeah, go figure.

Frankly? I really wish there was a way to boot the stupid off our planet. They're using up oxygen the rest of us could be breathing.

It's just really been a week, y'know? Meh. Matthew was pretty riled up about it, too, when I told him. And honestly, if a 15yr old boy -- who is probably hands-down the single most unaware, self-centered being on the planet -- can see there's a problem, you know it's gotta be a doozy.

My flu has settled in as bronchitis and sinusitis -- yay. So, antibiotics, here I come. Meh.
