I subscribe to the Planned Parenthood newsletter, and get regular updates, etc. This was in my inbox tonight, just now, and I feel like it's important enough to share. I've changed the donate link from the one for me, to the one linked off the homepage; if that doesn't work you can go to Planned Parenthood, and donate from there, if you're so inclined.

Dear Kimberlee,

This is a letter I hoped I'd never have to write.

The health care debate has come down to one thing: abortion. Anti-choice lawmakers want to do more than keep currently uninsured women from gaining access to comprehensive health care — as unconscionable as that is on its own. Their goal is to force all plans within the insurance exchange — including private plans that individuals pay for on their own — to deny coverage for abortion. Unbelievable.

Let me repeat that: if our opponents are successful, access to abortion will be practically eliminated in health care reform. And without access, there is no choice. The consequences for women, for our rights, and for our health care, are dire. It's an all-hands-on-deck moment, and we need your help, Kimberlee.

From the front page of this morning's New York Times:

Abortion opponents in both the House and the Senate are seeking to block the millions of middle- and lower-income people who might receive federal insurance subsidies to help them buy health coverage from using the money on plans that cover abortion. And the abortion opponents are getting enough support from moderate Democrats that both sides say the outcome is too close to call.

It's clear that months of relentless pressure by a small, vocal bunch of anti-choice extremists who will stop at nothing to get rid of a woman's right to choose — even if it means that millions upon millions of women, men, and children would remain uninsured — is working. Right now, Planned Parenthood is diverting as much time and money as we possibly can toward stopping them. Please join us with an emergency contribution today. We need all the help we can get.

Stopping this effort comes down to one simple thing: we have to be louder, stronger, and more aggressive than the anti-choice groups. It takes action, money, and constant pressure by you and me. I know that we are capable of it. You've been there for us and the people we serve in the past, and I hope you'll be with us today. We're working the phones, the mail, and the internet day and night to build a war chest for this fight and anything you can afford to pitch in will help our work — immediately.

I've said this before and it deserves repeating: without access to abortion, and to comprehensive reproductive health care, there is no choice. Please, contribute as much as you can. And then, please stay tuned — we'll be letting you know what else you can do.

Sincerely,

Cecile Richards, President
Planned Parenthood Action Fund

I got a letter last week sometime urging me to donate time or money to the ongoing fight to stop a Planned Parenthood from going up in our area. I donated money to PP instead. Thanks for the heads-up, religious guilt-trip letter!

I don't understand how many pro-lifers can't comprehend just how huge a deal it is if women DON'T have a choice about this. I grew up around them, was one before I even knew what I was claiming to be, but once I really grasped the issues at stake...I don't know, I just can't wrap my head around the fact that some women can be so blase' about losing such a crucial, crucial right.

*sighs*

Yeah, I don't know, either. I'm personally offended just by the idea that anyone BUT ME could make a decision on things that affect my body and my health. (Bad enough insurance companies have a say in what treatments/medications/procedures, etc. I can have. Now, hey, let's let the religious contingent AND government in!)

Grrr.

Everything was so much simpler when we were hunter gatherers.

*kicks the health care system*

I'm not against abortion, but I'm not for it either... my reasons behind my POV are kind of odd... I'm not for certain aspects of laws that surround it, I guess you could say. I had a friend in high school was physically capable of having her baby, wanted to and made plans with her boyfriend and close friends in order to be able to keep the child and finish school. Her parents forced her into having an abortion. I won't explain it more than that but yeah. I have another friend who did have a willing abortion when she was younger, she now seeks counciling. Another friend is unable to have children due to a procedure that went wrong. Those are only a few things...

...my roommate- whose from China- sees it as a population control and a normal thing because her parents generation, unless farmers, were only allowed to have one child. Now if she marries a guy whose an only child they can have two. But for her abortions are normal for people, especially unmarried teens, to get if they engage in risky behavior.

If I personally engaged in risky behavior and became pregnant than I'd accept the consequences of my actions and give birth and raise or give the child up for adoption. If I had a minor daughter who engaged in sexual activities after the consequences were explained I would not want her undergoing an abortion. After she turns 18 it would be her choice.

On the other hand I had a friend that was raped and became pregnant. The chinese use abortions to control their population... if the in-untero mother-child conflict becomes dangerous for the mother it's more viable fitness (sexual fitness) wise to save the mother (harsh but I'm an anthropologist). As long as the person isn't my family I'm not going to try and tell them what they should do. It's their choice and they have to live with it.

I got this same email the other night and have been thinking about scrounging up something to donate. It just boggles my mind that people want to dictate the things I can and cannot do with my body. It kills me, on top of that, how insurance companies can just say "nope, we're not going to cover your treatment, you've been dropped," after paying the sons-of-bitches outrageous premiums for years.

Is infuriating, I tell you.

WORD. i'm not sure we can ever accomplish it, as the anti-choice movement is not only extremely well-funded, they also have no problem at all gunning us down, but we definitely have to keep trying!
