what a way to kick off the day

I got a rather disturbing email from Comcast (my internet provider). If any of y'all who are computer/internet/file-sharing savvy would care to take a look at this and tell me what the hell it means, I would appreciate it.

The main thing I don't understand...this "IWANNACOWNLOAD.com", is that the site supposedly that I'm downloading from? Or contributing to? Because until I got this email, I'd never heard of the site. Also, the "report date/time" is listed as 4 Oct 2010, 19:22, but the "Initial Infringement Timestamp" is four hours *later*. I'm very confused. So, thoughts, comments, anything?

That part I can explain -- the Infringement Timestamps are GMT, the Report Date/Time is Mountain Time (that's what the -0700 means).

Oh, okay. thanks :)

[identity profile] raynedanser.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you have wireless? I wonder if someone else was using your connection? Otherwise, call them.

[identity profile] mickeym.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I do have wireless, and it's not password-protected, so it's possible. Hmm.

Yeah, guess I'm going to have to. I would email them, except in all the contact info there's NO EMAIL ADDRESS. Urgh.

[identity profile] raynedanser.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it sounds to me like someone leeched off your connection to download this whatever it was. Definitely contact them - and password protect your connection.

[identity profile] azephirin.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I'm thinking, too. You should be able to set a password for your wireless router pretty easily.

[identity profile] mickeym.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's hoping. Stupid people. I don't mind sharing my wireless, but I DO mind potentially getting in trouble for someone else!

[identity profile] mickeym.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I did call them (and waited on hold for like, 15 min. before I got a live person, geez) and explained to the very nice guy what I think happened. He said he would note it in the file, and there wouldn't be any repercussions (unless it happens again). And yeah, someone dl'd a recently-released movie, which, geez.

So now I gotta figure out password protecting my router. Gyah.

[identity profile] raynedanser.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's good anyway.

Good luck with the passwording. Each router is different, but maybe you can Google it? :D

Mine ISN'T passworded, but we're also very rural and literally no one is close enough to mooch off me. :D

[identity profile] fpvs.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Surely your internet provider would help you with the password protection. Mine helps me with all that stuff (then again, they won Best Customer Service many years in a row, I just assume this is standard help).

If you can't figure it out yourself, definitely ask your internet provider.

I do have wireless, and it's not password-protected, so it's possible.

actually more than possible, it's really common these days for folks to leech off other connections.

[identity profile] mickeym.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh. I don't mind sharing the connection -- I've done it before, on occasion, while visiting my dad. I DO mind someone doing something that could get me in trouble, while using my connection.

if only there was a wya to do one without risking the other :(

[identity profile] lazy-daze.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you DL and use a torrent? Maybe that site is where the torrent initiated but you might have downloaded the torrent from a different site like thepiratebay or whatever?

[identity profile] mickeym.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, I don't use torrents. I get my dls from megaupload, etc.

[identity profile] wendy.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Not a clue, but did you mean to have your full name viewable in a public post?

[identity profile] mickeym.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. Good point. thanks :)

Sweetie,

You need to get a wireless router that you can firewall so no one can leech off your connection. They're pretty cheap now, especially at someplace like Best Buy, Office Depot or Staples. I always get the Linksys Wireless Router, it does a really good job and is lockable.

I'd be happy to help you in any way you needed to get it set up. :)

*hugs*

I have a Netgear router, and I know I can password-protect it. It's just a matter of doing it, now. Guess I'll start with their website :)

Thanks :) I'll be sure to holler if I have questions/need help :)

[identity profile] zillahseye.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I know that IWANNADOWNLOAD.com is one of the sites that I download torrents from. Or rather, I dl via thepiratebay and a lot of their uploads are from there. I don't suppose your getting a MU of a file that was downloaded from that site would've registered with them? I know that IWANNADOWNLOAD has some kind of extra file in all its torrents that can bring you to the website (I uncheck that in my download). Maybe it has some sneaky connection that triggers to the website.

[identity profile] mickeym.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought that, too -- because the date/time more-or-less corresponds with when I was dling this week's H50 ep. But the customer service rep I spoke with at Comcast security said it was a recently released movie, and I don't do movies. I am leaning more and more toward someone "sharing" my wireless connection, so now I have to go see about password-protecting my router.

[identity profile] zillahseye.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, that SUCKS. You should be able to set up security on your router. It's sometimes fiddly to do, but it shouldn't take forever. Maybe Comcast could help you, if they also provide your internet service? At least they should be able to give you the site for your IP address where you can change your settings, and I think you can set up passwords there.

I'm glad they understood it might not be you because of your open wireless connection. Just lock yourself down and you'll be fine. :)

[identity profile] mickeym.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Just finished doing that! Now I'm good to go :)

[identity profile] quiet000001.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly think most of them don't care - it's more that they have to look like they care, so they cover their own ass. So if they go 'hey, someone complained' and you have a halfway decent story and you don't make a habit of it, well, hey, they asked!
