Question for the grammarly proficient:

'They lay' or 'They lie'?

depends on how you're writing it. At least I'm 98% positive that's how it is.

(If in context the line is past tense, lay is fine because it's the past tense of lie, which is part of why these two words are so confusing.)

Unless you did it yesterday. unfortunately, the past tense of lie is lay.
the past tense of lay is laid.
When I'm tired, I lie down and lay a cool cloth over my eyes.
Yesterday I lay down and laid a cool cloth over my eyes.
