So, I'm sitting here on the couch in my nightgown, covered up with a comforter while I finish my final chapter of homework. I haven't showered today, I haven't brushed my teeth, or my hair -- in short, I'm a mess (and I don't care because it's 630p and I'm ALMOST DONE WITH SCHOOLWORK).

Matthew just called me and said, "hey, mom, Justin's got some friends over and he wants to bring them over to meet you now, is that okay?"

Needless to say, I said NO.

President Roosevelt called it 'a date which live in infamy'. )

A lot of time has gone by since that date. It's been 70 years. The majority of the survivors of Pearl Harbor -- and WWII in general -- are gone; the ones who are still around are in their late 80's and 90's. There's been a lot of wars and conflicts fought since then, and horrible, tragic events get lost within a tide of other horrible, tragic events.

I read an article on CNN.com yesterday, where concern was expressed by the Pearl Harbor survivors, about how it's not being mentioned much any more. Matthew told me tonight that nothing was ever mentioned in his American history class about Pearl Harbor. This makes me so sad, because tragedy -- wherever it happened, whenever it happened, whoever it happened to -- shouldn't ever be forgotten.

I've heard and read in different places (including the article linked above) that members of our government (the US, that is) made it possible for the attack to happen. I don't know how much truth there is or isn't to that. But however it came about, it needs to be remembered.

It needs to be remembered so it never happens again, anywhere, ever.

Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] issendai at WARNING: Purina pet food has started making pets ill

My coworker John told me that his cat was seriously ill--throwing up, lethargic, refusing food, dropping weight. The previously healthy 6-year-old, 15-pound cat had lost a third of her body weight over the last few months. The vet couldn't find anything wrong with her. Blood tests were clean, and she didn't have any known illnesses. Yet she was a few days from organ failure.

That was a week ago. She's fine now. The solution was... to stop feeding her Purina cat food.

When John told me that, and said that friends of his had the same problem with their cats and Purina cat food, I looked into it. Holy shit. Take a look at the consumer complaints about Purina cat and dog food. This exact same problem has been an issue with Purina pet foods since 2007, but since this summer, the rate of complaints has picked up drastically. People who previously had to problems with Purina are reporting issues. Comment after comment sounds the same:

I've been feeding my three cats Fancy Feast canned food Chopped Grill Feast for many years. They have always devoured their meal and licked the plates clean. Last week, I noticed they did not want to eat much and went from plate to plate, ate a little. Next day, none of them would eat it. I kept trying new cans. What they did eat made them vomit and one cat was lethargic for days. I refuse to buy any more of this food. It's very scary. I don't know what is wrong with the food, but I fear it has toxins in it. I switched to another brand and the cats are fine now. Did anyone else experience this?

My dogs have been eating Purina Dog Chow (green bag) for about four years. They used to eat only Iams, but due to financial issues, we had to go with a cheaper brand. The last bag I purchased was about a week and a half ago. My 14 years old Labrador has vomited about 5-6 times and my German Shepherd has vomited about 4 times. Something is wrong with this food! The food has a kind of metallic smell to it. It just does not smell right. I'm taking it back to the pet store. I am changing my dogs' food, it's just not worth taking the chance to save a few dollars.

We purchased a large bag of Purina One Salmon dry cat food to give to a needy pet owner. She emailed us a couple of days later ,to say that there were maggots, lots of them with what looked to be like strands or webs with more dead gnats or flies, pieces of web in the food and "shells" of gnats or flies in the bag. Cats would not eat much of the food and, fortunately, they did not get sick. The store had noticed this problem in other bags and was willing to swap out.

I purchased a 34 lb bag of Purina One Smartblend dog food every three to four weeks for my two Labradors. The last bag I purchased seemed fine until I noticed a new infestation of little black bugs. Upon further inspection through the contents of the bag, I noticed clusters of white "eggs" adhered to quite a bit of the food. Some of these clusters contained larvae in the process of hatching. I immediately threw out the remaining contents of the bag but did save samples for my vet.

We went out of town last weekend and had friends dog sit for us. We originally attributed their lethargy and random vomiting to separation anxiety. Although they are doing better, I am still concerned and will be watching them closely. As stated, I saved samples of the infested dog food for our vet in the event that anything results from this issue.

I recently switched to the Friskies Poultry Variety pack (32 cans) that says it must be used by August 2013 (12281789 09:31 lo61237) sku (050000454242). I have 5 cats and feeding them this food, I noticed some of them throwing up. There's nothing in it but liquids, no hair ball, no food, nothing. My cats range from 8 weeks to 13 years old.

I switched my own cats to Purina a couple of months ago, and their coats look so much better than they did on the old brand of cat food... but Buffy has started vomiting stomach liquids. Purina and Fancy Feast are off the menu. Permanently.

I have no idea why this isn't news. But if you're feeding your pets any Purina brand, please don't wait for media confirmation that something is going on. Stop feeding your pets Purina immediately.

(EDITED TO ADD: I don't actually have a pet, myself; those 'I' statements up above are from those who cobbled this together. But if I did still have my pet, you can bet I'd be changing her food.)

mickeym: (holiday_stockings were hung)
Step One:
Make an LJ post. It can be public or friends only, whatever you’re most comfortable with. The post should contain your list of ten holiday wishes, and these wishes can be anything - from simple (a fan fiction written about your favorite pairing), to medium (a DVD you want), to really extravagant (a brand new laptop or car).

Just make sure these are wishes for things you really truly want.

Step Two:
Skim through your friends list and see who has posted their own wish lists. Then - and this is the most important part - if you find a wish you can grant, and it’s in your heart to do so, make sure that person’s wish comes true.

Sometimes a person’s trash is another person’s treasure. If you have a leather jacket you don’t want or a gift certificate you’re never going to use, give it to someone who wants it.

Step Three:
Post this wish list any time after November 1st. Then repost it two weeks before Christmas.
You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday fairy - to spread the joy.
Gifts can be made anonymously or not, it's your call.
There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

My wish list. )

And if you have a wishlist post, please link me?

I received this from Moveon.org, and then emailed it to pretty much everyone in my address book (as well as posting it to Facebook and Twitter)...but I'm posting it here, as well, because this really concerns me. Just the idea that the government could regulate the internet...no. So read the message from Moveon, and hopefully you'll agree with me and put your name to the petition. (And then share it with everyone YOU know, because this has to potential to affect every single one of us.)

Subject: Say NO to Internet Censorship

This week Congress is debating whether to grant themselves the
power to turn off parts of the Internet. Fun sites you YouTube.
Informative sites like Wikipedia. Political sites like MoveOn.org.

If enacted, new laws would force Internet Service Providers to block
websites that any corporation suspects violates a copyright or suspects
doesn't monitor it's users' content close enough for copyrighted
materials. That means that any website, foreign or based in the U.S.,
could be wiped out on suspicion and made unavailable to everyone in the

This week there will be a historic filibuster of the Internet Censorship
Act where the names of every person that signs a petition against Internet
censorship will be read. I added my name. Please add yours too.

Can anyone rec a good (preferably not-real-expensive) book on how-to with SQL/MySQL? I'm floundering, and the text my prof is using is...useless.

I'd really like something on the order of the Shelly Cashman Series. A clearly-stated, step-by-step on how to do something.

To everyone who sent me v-gifts, messages or emails wishing me a happy birthday, thank you so much :)

To everyone celebrating today, I wish you the happiest of days, full of good things to eat and loved ones to spend it with. To those not celebrating, I wish you a happy Thursday :)

Things I am thankful for:

1. My son. In spite of the frustration of raising a teenager, he's an awesome kid, and I'm very fortunate to have him.

2. My health. It's not as good as it could be, but I'm still a lot better off than many people.

3. My family. They don't understand me, most of the time, and they frustrate me endlessly, but they love me.

4. My friends. You understand me, you support me, you love me. I doubt I'd be able to face each day as I have, without you.

5. My life. It's far from perfect, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Y'all, I just don't even know, any more. I have always given to the Salvation Army during the holiday season; my spare change any time I was out and about went into one of their red kettles. And now, well. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lexicale, I know differently. Copied from her post:

A reminder this holiday season!

Pass by those red buckets, ignore those jingling bells.

The Salvation Army is a church not a charity. They are an anti-gay religious group that openly discriminates in its hiring process and denies benefits to same-sex partners. They are also pro-life.

But more significantly, they use the money they get to pay lobbyists to pass anti-gay legislation.

Here is a list of legislative action that the Salvation Army has funded to deny homosexuals their rights, or even make homosexual sex a criminal act.

For every dollar you put in their bucket, some of it will be spent to oppress gay men and women and make the world a worse place.

Here is a PDF from their own website detailing their bigoted and ugly views on sexuality -- a view point that has contributed to the bullying of and suicide of gay teens in this country.

There is the argument that they do feed the hungry -- and they do -- but please keep this in mind.

In 2004, when NYC planned to require businesses to extend benefits to same-sex partners, the Salvation Army threatened to close all their soup kitchens and leave the city. To be clear: The Salvation Army would rather people starve to death than recognize the rights of gay people.

They are a disreputable and bigoted group that do not deserve your support, especially when there are so many other, better charities out there working to feed the hungry.

So when you go shopping this season, please remember to pass by those buckets. Do not give them a cent. Money that you earned, that you worked for, that you donated in good faith, should not be used to back hate legislation.

Instead, please consider donating to one of these reputable charities:

The Red Cross
Doctors Without Borders
Habitat for Humanity
The Trevor Project

PLEASE spread this message and let your friends know. You can repost this info in your own journal, or link back here to mine.

Deceitful businesses such as the Salvation Army do not deserve your support. Taking people's money with the explicit goal of feeding the hungry, and then using it to back hate legislation, makes them dishonest at best, thieves at worst, and bigots either way.

EDIT: I added a link to cite the incident with NYC. Also, I got the date wrong -- it was 2004, not 2001. My apologies! I definitely want to keep all my facts straight and honest :)

EDIT 2: I changed the last line to explain why I believe the actions of the SA to be dishonest.

This whole deficit/tax mess that the people we've elected to take care of, *can't*...

We send billions of dollars every year overseas to different countries. Is that money that the government could use against the deficit? I understand that we should help those less fortunate...but there are a lot of people in our country who are going to be way less fortunate than they are now, since the deficit problem can't seem to be solved.

Anyway. If someone wants to try to explain this to me in small words, I'd be ever so grateful.
